How to hire a management consultant and get real results

The best consulting projects start with a sharp problem and end with change that lasts. Here’s how to get there.

Define the problem, not the solution

“Grow revenue in Germany by entering the B2B market” is a better starting point than “write us a strategy”. Say what decision you need to make, by when, and what information is missing.

Choose the right type of consultant

  • Independent experts: senior, hands-on, flexible.
  • Boutique firms: deep sector or functional specialism.
  • Large firms: scale for complex, multi-country programmes.
  • Fractional executives: when you need ongoing leadership, not a report.

Check credentials and track record

  • Case studies with measurable outcomes.
  • References from clients with a similar challenge.
  • Professional designations such as the Certified Management Consultant (CMC), awarded through ICMCI member institutes.
  • Sector knowledge in your markets.

Agree scope, deliverables and success measures

  1. A written statement of work with phases and milestones.
  2. Clear deliverables (analysis, recommendations, implementation support).
  3. How success will be measured, and when you’ll review progress.
  4. Confidentiality, data protection and who owns the work produced.
  5. Fees: day rate, fixed fee or retainer, and expenses policy.

Make the change stick

Put one of your own people alongside the consultant, so knowledge stays in the business. Plan the hand-over from the start. When you’re ready, build your brief and compare management consultants.
