Rights, releases and rules

  • Agree a licence that covers every channel, country and time period you need, or ask for a full buy-out.
  • Get written releases from anyone who appears on camera, and permission for private locations.
  • Music must be licensed for commercial use; don’t assume a track is free.
  • Drone filming needs the right permissions: FAA Part 107 in the US, CAA rules in the UK and EASA rules in the EU.

How to brief a production

  • The goal and where the video or photos will be used.
  • Audience, key message and a call to action.
  • Formats and aspect ratios (for example 16:9 for web, 9:16 for stories).
  • Locations, people, products and deadlines.
  • Whether you need subtitles or versions in other languages.

Use our brief builder to pull this together.

What affects the cost

Shoot days, crew size, locations, talent, equipment, animation, editing rounds, music licensing and the number of final versions. Get quotes that list pre-production, production and post-production separately.

Frequently asked questions

Do I own the video I paid for?
Only if the contract says so. Many producers license footage for agreed uses. Ask for the rights you need in writing.
How long should a business video be?
It depends on the platform. Social clips are often short; explainers and brand films can run longer. Your producer should advise for each channel.
Can I hire a crew in another country?
Yes. Many producers coordinate local crews abroad, or you can hire a local production company directly.
