How to compare quotes on different models

  1. Use the same brief for every provider.
  2. Ask hourly quoters for an estimate of total hours and a cap.
  3. Ask fixed-fee quoters exactly what’s included, and the rate for extras.
  4. For retainers, check what happens to unused hours and the notice period.
  5. Add expenses, taxes (such as VAT or sales tax) and software costs to every quote.

For professionals: choosing your model

Fixed fees reward efficiency and are easier for clients to approve. Hourly billing protects you when the scope is unclear. Retainers smooth out your income. Work out your floor with the hourly and day rate calculator before you quote.
